So that makes it a bit hard to swallow the sudden concern by those same Republican legislators that the bill may have been tainted through some involvement by Cylvia Hayes in the development of the bill. House Minority Leader Mike McLane wasted little time in trying to derail the legislation, which is almost certain to pass the House and be signed by new Gov. Kate Brown. The bill was among former Gov. John Kitzhaber's principle efforts and Brown is on the same page with her predecessor on this. But McLane and other Republicans are trying to throw a monkey wrench into the works by suggesting that Hayes, Kitzhaber's scandal-plagued fiancee, had her hand in the bill's development, notwithstanding the fact there is no such evidence. Republicans say requiring the progressively tougher low-carbon standard will drive up fuel prices and hit Oregonians in the pocketbook by as much as a dollar a gallon. But that's over 10 years and a state study says the upper end of that cost is 19 cents a gallon, hardly a deal-breaker given the volatility of gas prices. GOP leaders know they have all but lost the fight on this and are reaching to come up with a game-changer.
