Christian Ashland Senate Filibusters must stop! The petty tactics of Democratic Senators who consistently block the nominations of numerous qualified appointees to the federal bench is nothing short of ridiculous. The Senate needs to vote up or down, yes or no -- not lock out opportunity for a full vote of the senate on judicial nominees. Conservative nominees such as Miguel Estrada, Charles Pickering, Carolyn Kuhl, Janice Rogers Brown, and Priscilla Owen have been thwarted simply because these experienced and competent candidates do not align with the liberal ideology of Senate Democrats. The use of obstruction through prolonged speeches -- strictly for the purpose of delaying legislative action is a silly game played out to dismiss fairness and integrity. For the first time in 11 years, on Wednesday, November 12, all 51 Republican Senators engaged in a continuous all-night debate on the subject of the Rules of Filibuster. The issue is whether the Constitution allows for filibusters on judicial nominees, as well as the unprecedented blocking of a President's nominees. Appointments made to our federal courts should be of deep interest to every American. The courts were designed to interpret law, not make it... to determine the constitutionality of issues that are brought before each judicial body. There are numerous vacancies on our federal courts resulting in backed-up cases and postponed justice. The need for judicial appointments to be approved and seated is at a place of grave urgency. This is impossible if the litmus test is based on Party dogma and the Senate will not even call for a vote. If you are concerned about this obstruction, please register your comments and concern to our elected officials and urge that they cast votes on the issues that are important to us today.
