Shive, a singer performer in violin her entire adult life, has played for the likes of Diana Ross, Elvis, Tony Bennett, Chick Corea, Crystal Gayle, Bette Midler and Neil Diamond. Now she wants to help musicians of the next generation achieve their dreams of their own. "I've always thought teaching was my gift," Shive said. "I love helping my students perform and I love teaching my teenagers - helping them get ready for musicals and contests." Shive plays and teaches violin, viola piano and sings, and has been the concertmaster of three freelance orchestras in the Los Angeles area, played professionally in the Honolulu, New Jersey, Chico and Eugene symphonies. In her pre-Ashland career, Shive recorded several movie soundtracks, and recalls watching Leonard Nemoy walking around her orchestra as they played during the making of "Start Trek 4." "It was a common thing to go to work and see somebody famous every day," Shive said. Shive was the concertmaster of Rogue Opera for six years before bowing out of the Southern Oregon music scene to handle family responsibilities. Now she is back and throwing herself into playing, teaching and recording - including recent opportunities to play for KD Lang and Pat Benetar. Drawn to the spiritual side of New Age music, Shive plans to record some new age CDs. Another goal she has is to help bring salaries up for Rogue Valley musicians. "It would be great if we musicians could have more patrons of the arts. We need to create opportunities for exciting big-city musicians," Shive said. "I really wish Ashland could take its place in the music world." In the meantime, Shive focuses on teaching out of her GardenWay Music studio in Ashland. She can be reached at 482-7436.
