It’s not a loss, but it definitely isn’t a win either … unless, of course, you are playing for the road ahead. ASHLAND’S BRIANA LESCHER returns a shot to South Medford’s Emily Works during Thursday’s No. 1 singles match at Hunter Park. Lescher won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings “We wanted to change things around this time,” said Ashland head coach Bridget Zwemke after her Ashland High girls tennis team tied South Medford 4-4 Thursday afternoon at Hunter Park. “We decided to look ahead to districts and try to improve our individual player’s seeds for the end of the season.” Zwemke wanted to give singles players Briana Lescher, Maddy Stokes and Sara Cox a chance to play against South Medford’s higher ranked singles players, and a chance to move up in the conference standings. To do this, Zwemke moved Ashland’s normal top singles player, Kayla Moyse, to a wider court and paired her with Dana Baker to play against South’s top doubles pairing. “Our best doubles team beat South’s best doubles team the last time around,” Moyse said, “so we had a chance to play around with the sets and give everyone a chance to move up in the district tournament.” Moyse, currently the top singles player in the conference, dealt with the change well as her and partner Baker handled South’s top pairing of Dana Anderberg and Mandy Engler easily in two sets, 6-2, 6-1. “It’s harder for me to play doubles,” Moyse said. “In singles you can get out there and smash the ball, but doubles isn’t really about power. You have to work the angles, you have to know where your teammate is on the court and you have to place your serves a lot differently.” On the opposite side of the switch, Lescher found a way to pick up a win against South’s top single player, Emily Works, with a lot of hustle and excellent placement on the court. “It wasn’t my best match,” said Lescher, “but I still picked up the win, so I have some room to improve, especially on my serving.” Luckily for Lescher, who won in straight sets (6-3, 6-4), districts are still a month away and with her latest win, she will potentially move up in the tournament seeding, giving her a better chance to advance in the tournament. Zwemke praised Lescher for her win under pressure and Sylvia Van Ausdal, the addition to the singles side of the event, who took her No. 4 singles opponent Chelsea Stone to the third set before finally pulling out a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 win late in the evening. “The team played really well this time around,” Zwemke said. “It’s always good to play better with every outing and that is what this team is doing. The girls are really impressing me.” In the end, the tie will fit right into the middle of the team’s overall record of 4-1-2. However, the Grizzlies hope that the experience gained and the placements which have been improved upon will weigh more heavily in the long run. “You want to be toward the top when you get to the end.” Lescher said. “Hopefully, this will help us all do that.” SINGLES — Briana Lescher, A, def.
