Board members met Friday morning at the school district office to add specifics to the five goals the school board approved at its Monday night meeting. They worked on three of the five during the two-hour meeting. An hour of the time was spent discussing the first objective: stabilize district enrollment by providing innovative programs and showcasing existing excellence. To do so, a committee will be formed to evaluate extending kindergarten and report to the board in November. A committee looking into a K-8 magnet school will present its findings to the board in October. “This is important because, if we don’t offer options, we will lose people,” board member Ruth Alexander said. Studying the needs and desires of Ashland families, and examining current district efforts to meet those needs will be another part of stabilizing enrollment. An exit questionnaire will also be developed to explore why families leave the Ashland School District, and the next demographer’s report will include information about the school-age children not attending public schools. The third part of stabilizing enrollment will be identifying and implementing methods of showcasing excellence in schools, including a community newsletter, video clips on RVTV and using key communicators to promote highlights. Opening district committees to community members, parents and students when feasible, hiring a curriculum director and creating a task force to study alternatives for students not thriving in school will be subsections of other board goals. Other items board members had said would be on the agenda will be addressed down the road. Herbicide use at Ashland schools was deferred to the October meeting and a special session of the board will be held at a future date to discuss leasing a portion of Lincoln Elementary School to Siskiyou School, a local Waldorf program. They want more input from district teachers and the families who vacated Lincoln when the school closed in June. “Part of the equation has to be ‘What period of time?’” said Barbara Heyerman, a retired public school teacher. “Waldorf is only asking for a two-year period of time.
