The book sale, at 11 West 2nd St., will be open on Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be close to 500 hardcover and softcover books for sale, including a complete set of local angling author Zane Grey's writings, fiction, non-fiction, children's literature and even some new books courtesy of Barnes and Noble. "We got 12 boxes of new books from Barnes and Noble," Robert Mumby, president of the Friends of the Phoenix Library, said. "We've got some great books that people donated, as well. Classics, encyclopedias - sometimes we get some interesting art books. We always have a really good selection of children's books." Mumby said the annual book sale is always a good place to find a new book for young readers because prices are so much lower than those of a new book store and because young children go though books so rapidly. "You'll find some real treasures once in a while," Mumby said. He said paperbacks will sell for $0.50 each or three for $1. Hardcovers are typically $1 a piece while some of the more precious finds can sometimes cost $2. The last half hour of the sale all books are available for half price. But, Mumby said, the danger in waiting is that the sale is combed over by book dealers so the valuable editions are often gone by this point. The Friends of the Phoenix Library are trying to raise more than $100,000 for the new county library in Phoenix. Recently, the city and the county agreed to swap real estate so that the Jackson County Library can build a new library for Phoenix on the site of the current city hall. In return, the city received the current library building and $260,000. So far, the Friends have raised more than $10,000 for the construction of the new building. Mumby said the Friends will ask for additional donations from the business community. In 2000, voters approved a bonded measure for new library services throughout the county that will pay for the rest of the construction of the new library. Mumby said community meetings concerning the design of the new library begin this June. He said the city of Phoenix should have a new library in place by the middle of 2007. The new library, he said, will contain a large, glass-enclosed study room, an expanded Hispanic book section and more computers, space and books.
