Man gets 14 months for hiding daughter in Florida Trevor Forrest Long Tuesday May 23, 2017 at 7:45 PM May 23, 2017 at 7:45 PM By Nick Morgan For the Tidings An Ashland man who spent more than two months on the lam with his wife and child before they were found in Florida was sentenced Tuesday to more than a year in prison after pleading guilty to domestic violence and custodial interference charges. Trevor Forrest Long, 34, admitted to taking his 7-year-old daughter out of Department of Human Services custody and out of the state last fall with his wife, Sara Margaret Long, when Long wasn't supposed to contact either of them while domestic violence charges were pending. On Dec. 22, the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force captured the Longs in Orlando after they spent 2½ months hiding from authorities with their daughter. Trevor Long admitted Tuesday that he strangled his wife to the point where she lost consciousness and shoved his daughter away after the child tried to intervene last June. As part of a negotiated plea agreement, a misdemeanor charge of harassment was dropped. Sara Long has a pending felony charge of custodial interference alleging she picked up their child from Helman Elementary School Oct. 7, days after DHS placed the child in a relative's custody after Long missed a court case in her husband's domestic violence case. Witnesses near the school reportedly saw the family riding together in Trevor Long's 2012 Dodge Ram pickup truck towing a black BMW on a trailer, according to an Ashland police press release. Jason Caplan, who filled in during the hearing for Long's lawyer, Jeni Feinberg, said Long has entered treatment programs at the Jackson County Jail, has undergone counseling, and that DHS has allowed contact with his child. Long briefly apologized to the court and his family, but said little else during the hearing. Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia sentenced Long to 14 months in jail. Long was granted credit for time served since his capture in Florida, because he was cooperative with authorities and waived an extradition hearing, according to Deputy District Attorney Ruby Herriott. Circuit Court records show Long has no prior felony convictions, but was previously convicted of misdemeanor strangulation in 2006.
