--> --> Grizz boys tennis team continues torrid play; girls roundup Ashland Daily Tidings ROSEBURG - The Ashland High boys tennis team continued to tear through the Southern Oregon Conference competition, this time with an 8-1 rout of Roseburg Tuesday night. With the victory the Grizzlies improved to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the SOC. But the 5-1 mark goes for not as the loop champion is decided at the District Tournament. "Pretty much everyone is just playing for seeds," Grizz head coach Dick Streng said. "Hopefully with the group of coaches we have, we can change it in the future so that the dual matches go toward the conference championship and the tournament is for the individuals to get to state." Against the Indians, the Grizzlies swept through the doubles events and won all but one singles match. Senior Aaron Harris breezed through his No. 1 singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Cory Frazier. Other singles victories for Ashland were recorded by senior Jacob Morris and sophomores Shane Lloyd and Jonathan Willing. Ashland's sophomore team of Michael James and Kevin Spears cruised to an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over Stewart Wetmore and Tarco Schricher in the top doubles match. "We had a couple guys out sick so it was nice to see guys step up and get victories," Streng said. "We are pretty deep and very determined. We don't have all-stars up down the lineup, but they have a lot of heart." Streng will send the bottom half of the Grizz squad into battle Thursday afternoon when they host Grants Pass. The top players will head north to the prestigious Jesuit tournament Friday and Saturday in Portland. The tourney will feature the top teams in the state. Girls Tennis At Ashland, in the last of four consecutive home matches, the Grizz girls fell to Roseburg 6-3 Tuesday at Hunter Park. The Indians rolled to a pair of shutout victories in the top two singles matches and Ali Gardiner was the lone Grizz to record a win on the singles side. In doubles the team of Jenny Spears-Jessica Baker and Beth Lilley-Rachel Frires each recorded victories. Ashland travels to Grants Pass Thursday. Email your...
