--> --> Advisory group to review ASD policies By Maggie McGehee Ashland Daily Tidings Money was a sticking point for Ashland School District officials as they discussed whether to sign a $10,000 contract with the Oregon School Board Association for the organization to review and update the district's outdated policies. "In general, we would take your current policy manual and any publications that have a policy statement in them and conduct an analysis of the policies," OSBA representative Nancy Coursey told the school board this week. The school board voted 4-1 Monday to sign the contract, which states that the district would pay OSBA over three years. Board member Kent Provost opposed the contract, stating that the district should undertake such a matter when it wasn't in the midst of deciding on where to cut services to children. Under the contract, ASD officials would work with the OSBA to rewrite any outdated policies, according to Coursey, but there are at least 125 policies the district is required by state and federal law to have in place. The OSBA would not write any new policies for the district, Coursey said. Instead, school board members would do so after receiving suggestions from the OSBA. The process is scheduled to take up to 20 months to complete, Coursey said. In other action, the school board: · passed a resolution urging state legislators to find alternatives to cutting the state's $5.2 billion K-12 education budget; · accepted the 2000-2001 district audit with the matter slated to come back to the board for approval at its January meeting, after district staff have had the chance to review the document; · adopted the 2001-2002 budget calendar.
