Julie French | Daily Tidings A curtain in The New Theatre caught on fire today just before 8:30 a.m. Damage was confined to the curtain, theatre employees said, and will not be expensive to replace. "Distracted," the play currently showing in the theater, was not scheduled for a performance tonight, and will likely resume on Tuesday evening, employees said. Dane Coefer, assistant custodial supervisor at the theater, was one of the first on the scene. He saw a "bit of billowing smoke in the lighting gallery," he said, and the fire department arrived shortly after. There were no flames, although officials said it can still be considered a fire. "Technically, it probably was a fire because it was glowing a little bit," said Capt. Scott Hollingsworth. "It was confined to a folded-up curtain in an area two feet by a foot by a foot." "The curtains are all non-flammable, so they won't support combustion, but they're smoldering," said Division Chief Greg Case. Firefighters originally suspected the fire was caused by an electric motor, according to Case. Later it was confirmed that no motor was involved. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
