However, the percentage of Ashland High School students who met standards on reading knowledge fell for the second year in a row and the scores in math knowledge dropped by 7 percentage points. As a result, AHS received a “satisfactory” rating, approximately the equivalent of a C-plus. Ashland Schools Superintendent Juli Di Chiro pointed out that the AHS scores — and those of all other Ashland schools — outdo the statewide averages by a significant margin and that any declines in test scores occurred only when Ashland students were compared to themselves. “I don’t think it’s a problem. I think it’s a variation of kids,” Di Chiro said, explaining the scores of each year’s 10th graders are held up to those of the previous class. “I think it’s comparing apples to oranges.” According to the report cards, which have no effect on funding or curriculum, all Ashland schools have “exceptional” school characteristics and students’ academic achievement is “strong” across the board. But small declines in test scores compared to a year ago caused most schools to not earn an “exceptional” mark. “That’s what hurt them this year, even though our averages are higher than most of the state,” Di Chiro said. Attendance also weighs in heavily on the state report card. Ashland Middle School and Helman, which did not receive a grade from the state because the school was restructured two years ago, both had attendance figures below the state averages. “Attendance is hurting is in these ratings,” Di Chiro said. “We’re disappointed that that happened, but that’s what happened.” The middle school also received a “satisfactory” grade, even though math scores improved by a point. Attendance rates fell slightly and reading scores dropped by 3 percentage points. Lincoln and Walker elementary schools earned “strong” marks from the state. The school report card is released annually by the Oregon Department of Education to inform parents about where improvements might be needed within their children’s schools, and also to note the successes of programs. Copies of the report card will be sent home with students or mailed to parents, and the information is available on the ODE Web site.
