Wildfire expert Dr. Paul Hessburg will present "The Era of Mega Fires," a 70-minute multimedia presentation starting with a reception at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the Southern Oregon University Science Auditorium. Megafires are wildfires over 100,000 acres and are exceptionally destructive to communities, wildlife and natural spaces. The evening's agenda also includes food and community dialog about wildfire, smoke and community resiliency, and it's all part of an effort to tackle wildfire’s threat to Ashland residents' way of life, economy and natural world, organizers say. Hessburg is with the Pacific Northwest Research Station in Wenatchee, Washington, and the University of Washington, Seattle, where he has researched wildfire and landscape ecology for more than 27 years. The presented material comes in the form of fast-moving, short, topic-based talks interspersed with compelling video vignettes. The event is sponsored by the SOU Environmental Science Program, Ashland Chamber of Commerce and the city of Ashland Wildfire Mitigation Commission.
