MONDAY February 23, 2004 - Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card Valley&State Backpage O&E Sports Archives Classifieds Faith&Beliefs Obituaries Revels January 15, 2004 A Duck hunting in Ashland I live at the end of Nevada Street, less than a block from the entrance to the new Billings Ranch development. Most of the residents who live down here have been none to pleased with this whole process or the development as a whole. There are a few exceptions, but they seem to be city employees. I have a gutter full of mud, the trucks that go by daily shaking the whole road as they go, have left cracks in my walls, the radios in these trucks turn my remote controlled stereo on and open the door of the cd player, and the list goes on. I regularly walk my dog on the property, we do no harm and I always stay away during working hours out there. I was out there on Sunday morning about 8:30 walking my dog. I was headed toward the pond and came around one of the large dirt mounds they have created, when I looked up to see a camo clad shotgun toting hunter walking towards me. I was shocked, to say the least and then outraged. Here we are less than a block from the backs of the peoples homes on Cambridge and this man is hunting. I told him that he had no business hunting in the city limits and that I thought this couldn't possibly be legal, and that if he did not leave, I was going to call the authorities. He said go ahead, I did, and was told the state police would come and check out the situation. I was also told by this man, who appeared to be one of the construction workers who works out there, that they - there were two of them - had permission to hunt ducks at the pond from John Billings and the developer. Now, frankly I don't give a hoot who they had permission from, this is insane. That pond is a kid magnet, the neighborhood kids play down there all the time. So, here we have two camo-wearing hunters hiding in the bushes around the Billings pond, hunting ducks, within the city. So, if this is legal, I would assume I can get out my shotgun and start hunting ducks from my back yard if I so chose, they fly over my house all the time. If this isn't a tragic accident waiting to happen, I don't know what is. I will say that despite the man's insistence that they had the right to hunt there, they were long gone when I came back up the hill. I would love to know what on earth, the people who gave permission for such reckless behavior were thinking, and I pray, that Ashland has more sense than to allow hunting in an area so close to families and homes. And to those who say "if it's done safely" I say check out how many hunters, livestock, pets and even innocent people are killed by hunters every year. I don't care how safe you think your being, no one has any business hunting that close to, much less, in a residential area.
