Lighting: Robert Peterson Moscow glimmers like a beacon in the distance for the Prozorov sisters. They are trapped in a provincial Russian town, surrounded by family, friends and those who would be more than friends. But their ordinary conversations and everyday actions, recorded by master observer Anton Chekhov, become the strains of an exquisite symphony of dreams and poignant desires to make a difference in a world that seems forever out of reach. The play, directed by Libby Appel, is set in the home of the children of the late General Prozorov-Andrey and his three sisters, Olga, Masha and Irina. It is shortly before luncheon on Sunday, May 5, Irina's name-day and the first anniversary of the death of their father. They left Moscow 11 years earlier, and the three sisters are dreaming, as they so often do, of the time when Olga and Irina - 11 return. Masha, who is married, will visit them. Their friend and downstairs neighbor, the army doctor Chebutykin, arrives with the young officers Tuzenbach and Solyony. They announce that the new commanding officer, Vershinin, will be coming to pay his respects. Masha is bored and means to go home. Before she can leave, however, Irina's presents arrive - a cake from Protopopov of the County Council, and a silver samovar from Chebutylkin. The women are particularly vexed by Chebutykin''s gift, which is the traditional token a husband presents to his wife on their twenty-fifth anniversary. The Prozorovs feel that their culture and education are wasted in this provincial town, but Vershinin believes that they are somehow improving the quality of life here and everywhere, and that in "two or three hundred yea, life on earth will be unimaginably beautiful ..." Thus begins Chekov's intimate journey into the lives of the Prozorov sisters.
