Engelbert Humperdinck's classic opera "Hansel and Gretel," will be sung in English from a new translation by Marcie Stapp. This story recreates a magical world complete with heroic children, an evil witch, fairies and Humperdinck's familiar hauntingly beautiful music - known to many for "Evening Prayer," the simple lullaby that came from the opera. There will be four performances in three locations, including a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 16 in the Angus Bowmer Theater in Ashland; the premiere, at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif.; and two performances at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford, 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, and a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, Nov. 23. The final matinee will follow the annual tree lighting ceremony in downtown Medford. The opera, "Hansel and Gretel," is based on the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Music Director David MacKenzie describes opera as the "Queen" of musical art forms and believes that "Hansel and Gretel" will provide an excellent way to introduce the art of opera to a wider audience. The cast includes many of the Rogue Valley's most well-known singers, including Patricia Leines as Gretel, Lorrie Hall in a double role as the Witch and the Mother, SOU Professor of Voice Fredna Grimland, as the Dew Fairy and Andrew Brock as the Sandman. Additional vocalists include Jenny Knapp from Seattle as Hansel and Erik Hundtoft from Portland as the Father. Music for the opera will be played by the Rogue Chamber Orchestra, directed by MacKenzie, and will also feature many area children and selected members of the SOU Concert Choir. OSF's Bruce Wallace Hostetler is the stage director and scenic and costume design is by Christine Meyers, with and lighting design by Noah Beauregard. Tickets for the Weed performance are $25 for adults, $10 for students and are available by calling the Rogue Opera office at 608-6400. Tickets for the Ashland performance are $30 for adults, $10 for students, with limited availability, and are available at Paddington Station in Ashland, online at www.rogueopera.org, or by calling the Rogue Opera office at 608-6400. Tickets for the Medford performances are $30 for adults, $10 for students and are available through the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater Box Office at 779-3000. Rogue Opera's next full stage production of the 2003-2004 season will be a presentation of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta "HMS Pinafore" in May of 2004 in collaboration with Opera A La Carte of Los Angeles.
