--> --> Oct. 29: Ashland girls advance to state cross country meet; prep, college roundup Ashland Daily Tidings EAGLE POINT - For the first time since 1990 someone other than a member of the Ashland High girls cross country team took home first place in the Southern Oregon Conference championships. On Saturday, Roseburg's Melis Garner won in the individual title, while Ashland finished second in the team event - good enough to qualify for this Saturday's state meet in Eugene. Ashland was led by Therese McCaffrey's fourth-place finish in 20:14. She was followed by Mariah Mayfield (10th, 20:47), Rihana Patterson (13th, 20:59), Claire Chavez (17th, 21:19), Gretchen Burettner (18th, 21:20) and Kendall Clark (23rd, 21:38). Klamath Union won the girls event with 54 points, while Ashland had 62. A review of the videotape of the final 10 meters of the boys race cost the Grizz boys a trip to the state meet. Several runners became disoriented as they entered the final chute entering the stadium. After review of the tape, it showed that South's Alando Pacas had passed Ashland's Asha Stout-Wolfe (16:48) for 12th place and that was enough to send the Panthers to the state meet with the No. 2 slot. Klamath Union won the boys event for the fifth-straight year, while South finished with 79 points - one ahead of Ashland. Ashland's Dave Richardson finished 16th with a time of 16:52. Next Saturday's state championships are held at Lane Community College. AHS Water Polo At Springfield, for the second straight year the Grizz boys wrapped up the Southern Conference championship Saturday. The Grizz boys knocked off Marist 22-2 in the first round and then held off Sheldon 9-5 to win the championship. Senior Brad Scoles led the Grizz effort in the title game with three goals, two assists and three steals. Senior Evan Mather added a goal, four assists and three steals. The Grizz will travel to Tualatin Hills Nov. 9 and 10 for the state tournament. Scoles picked up the conference MVP for the second straight year and was joined by Mather on the first-team all-conference list. Junior Kyle Asher made the second team list. The Grizz girls finished fourth in the conference meet. Ashland dropped a pair of heartbreakers to Cottage Grove (7-6) and Sheldon (8-7). Senior Elisa Jessop came away with first-team all-conference accolades, while senior Ava Godfrey was a second team selection. SOU Volleyball At Portland, the Raiders were able to take one game off of defending champion Concordia, but the Cavs won the match Saturday 30-20, 25-30, 33-31, 30-26. Concordia improved to 20-3 overall, while SOU dropped to 14-7. Raider sophomore outside hitter Kristina Matchett led all players with 27 kills and set a new school mark for kills in a season. Junior April Lowe added a team-high 21 digs, while senior setter Sabrina Garboden added 52 assists and 20 digs. The Raiders play their final home match of the season Saturday when they host Evergreen State. Email your...
