"We were pretty confident in the meet," Grizz head coach Neil Foley said. "We had the chance just to do some experimenting. We still had some really good times." The Ashland teams, especially the boys' squad, mixed up their lineups to allow swimmers the opportunity to dabble in events they don't usually compete in. Even with the change-ups, both the boys' and girls' teams outdid the Panthers to the tune of 40 points or more. "We had a very good day," Foley said. "We were very please. We're just really progressing very well." The ladies The Grizz girls relied on the consistency of standouts Ashley Roda and Michelle Smith to push them past the Panthers 128-86. "The girls' team swam some of their strong events because South Medford is in the top half of the league," Foley said, "so we couldn't do too many goofy things with the girls' team." Roda, a sophomore, beat her previous record in the 200-yard freestyle to notch the first individual Ashland win of the meet. Roda's win inspired a Grizzly sweep of the top three places in the event and pushed Ashland to an early 26-10 lead. Two events later, Smith showed off with a two-second personal record in the 100-yard butterfly that urged the Grizzlies on to a 60-40 lead that never evaporated. As they built up a cushion against the Panthers, the Grizz girls collected wins in all three relays. Caitlin Emery swam on two of the three winning Ashland relays and notched a victory in the 100-yard backstroke to pad the Grizz lead. "Caitlin had a very good meet," Foley said. "She swam very well in the relays." The guys While the girls had a few of their top swimmers stick to their strong events, the boys' team switched everything up against South Medford and still performed very well. Ashland throttled the Panther boys 131-82, illustrating why the Grizz may be the top boys' swim team in the Southern Oregon Conference. "On the guys' side, we had some very good times," Foley said. For example, in the 500-yard freestyle, Arron Nelson and Geoff Berteau had strong showings as they both scored points in a grueling event they normally don't compete in. Nelson won the race and Berteau finished third. Nelson also earned a win in the 200-yard freestyle and Berteau got a victory in the 200-yard individual medley.
