[Photo by Jyl Klein] Tuesday Feb 28, 2017 at 2:00 AM Local report The children at the Kids Challah Bake at Chabad of Southern Oregon in Ashland on Feb. 12 had fun making challah (Jewish braided bread), many for the very first time. The children, with the help of their parents and grandparents, mixed all the ingredients together, forming a dough which they kneaded. While the dough was rising, children sang, danced, played games, learned about Shabbat and enjoyed crafts. "We are so excited to offer such exciting programs to the children in the Valley, giving them a wonderful taste of their rich Jewish heritage,” says Faigy Zwiebel, director of Chabad’s children's division. “We put lots of thought and energy into planning each program so it is the most memorable and hand on experience. We want each child and parent to walk away with a feeling of 'wow, we want more of this.'" Chabad host another for kids: a Hamentash Bakeoff. Children will have the opportunity to make hamentashen (a traditional triangular filled cookie), roll the dough, make circles and fill them with all kinds of fillings, including a special s'mores hamentash with marshmallows and chocolate chips. Songs, dancing, crafts and games will follow. The program is in honor of the holiday of Purim on March 12, when traditional hamentashen are eaten to commemorate the miracle that took place. The bakeoff starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Chabad Mitzvah Deli, 1474 Siskiyou Blvd. To join in, RSVP at www.ChabadofAshland.org or call Faigy at 541-482-2778. Parents and grandparents are invited to join their children. Space is limited. Cost is $3 per child ($8 at the last minute); donations are appreciated to help cover the cost. All are welcome, regardless of affiliation or background.
