Darci Van Duzer, a native of Ashland, has entwined international issues such as peace building and conflict resolution in her life and education. "Communication is international," says Van Duzer, yet there are numerous components that complicate international communication. Currently a graduate student at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Van Duzer has found a focus for her international work - violent intrastate conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa. "There is a real need for it in Africa," says Van Duzer. Van Duzer is concerned about the political instability and conflicts, disease, and limited resources in Africa, which she believes can be helped by work such as hers. "Violent intrastate conflicts are those which involve multiple parties within states as opposed to international conflicts," explains Van Duzer. "For example, the conflict in Sierra Leone involved three to four different factions fighting over control of the government and diamond mines (natural resources). "The parties/factions are all domestic and fighting inside the country as opposed to fighting externally or with other nations. Sometimes other countries can become involved in the civil wars, such as in Congo where up to six different nations are involved in the fighting which, has been mostly about replacing the government as well as controlling the wealth of the country." This summer Van Duzer will join 99 other international students and young professionals from all over the world for a month-long symposium given by the Institution for International Mediation and Conflict Resolution in conjunction with George Washington University and Erasmus University Rotterdam. "The best of the best," says Van Duzer, who will instruct the various classes and simulations, diplomats and other specialists from around the world. Van Duzer speaks with enthusiasm as she describes the opportunity that lies ahead for her. "This will be great experience with fabulous classes," says Van Duzer. She looks forward to meeting people in the top of their field from all over, sharing experiences and backgrounds with one another.
