Tlen Huicani to perform music of Veracruz at Unitarian Center The music of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, will come alive in Ashland as the Mexican group, Tlen Huicani, performs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 at the Unitarian Center, 4th and C Streets, Ashland. Founded in 1973 at the State University of Veracruz in Jalapa, Tlen Huicani is considered one of the most faithful representatives of the folklore of Veracruz. Under the direction of Maestro Alberto de la Rosa Sanchez, Tlen Huicani, which means "the singers" in the indigenous Nahuatl language, has performed in more than 50 different countries and has captured and preserved much of the music of the "Jarocho" and "Huasteco" styles in a number of recordings, and radio and television performances. The most important aspect of the group is the interpretation of the music of the Jarocha harp, performed by artistic director Sanchez. With Sanchez's harp and Alfonso Lagunes' lead vocals anchoring the group, Tlen Huicani includes performers on the eight-string jarana, four-string requinto and the bass-like guitarron. Natives of the different regions of Veracruz, these musicians strive to preserve the different music expressions of Veracruz in their purest forms. Tlen Huicani has also learned music of the Central and South America countries which they have visited. The Union of Music and Theater Critics of Mexico proclaimed Tlen Huicani "best folk music group in Mexico." They have represented Mexico on several occasions at the International World Harp Conferences including the 2002 Conference in Geneva.
