This year the program of eight short works will focus on the theme "Men are from Mars, Women from Venus." Audience members won't see full productions, but rather staged readings. These short plays are designed to tell a story quickly with an element of surprise. At the end of the evening, the audience will vote for the piece they would like to win the People's Choice award of $50. o "Pre-Life Pre-Nuptial" by Bill Johnson hammers home that pre-nuptial contracts can be testy enough to write, but the dilemma of trying to agree on conditions based on the problems and challenges of many lifetimes together can be an even greater challenge. o "Gene and Jean" are the last survivors of an apocalyptic event on Earth in Mitzi Miles-Kubota's play. They share the same name but this isn't the only joke destiny has for these two. o In "The Talk," James Caputo tells the story of two teenage girls eagerly anticipating "The Talk," which will propel them to women and ordain them as priestesses in the Secret Royal Order of the Feminine Gender. What does transform the girls into women? o In "Caterpillar" by Frank Higgins, a man discovers his wife crying in the back yard in the middle of the night. When he learns that she's crying over a caterpillar, it triggers a confrontation: Are their lives as empty as the life of the caterpillar who has traveled around and around on the edge of a bowl? Can this possibly be a lesson about life? From a caterpillar? o Ashland's Dori Appel explores the unique relationship between two sisters in "Playing Favorites" and the challenge for understanding in a family with a novel situation. o "Holy Hell" by Barbara Lindsay will shock; but even with its harshness there is a truth and compassion. o In "Sensitivity," John A. Donnelly, asks: If the sex is great and two people are head over heels in love, but one determines that the other is insensitive, can the relationship work? And try to figure how Old Yeller fits into the mix. o And finally, by Cherisse Montgomery, "Lillian Goes to the Mirror," a tale of what constitutes the beauty of a woman's body and soul. Some 60 playwrights submitted entries for the event. A committee of readers selected the eight finalists which included some familiar names. James Caputo returns from southern California. His piece, "Maternal Spirits," was read at ANPF 2003 and featured Brandy Carson as Momma Rose. Returning playwright Dori Appel, and first-timer Mitzi Miles-Kubota represent works from Ashland. John A. Donnelly will be back with another piece. His play "Learning Experience at Elderhostel" won the People's Choice award in July. Rounding out the list of playwrights are Barbara Lindsay from Seattle, Cherisse Montgomery from Detroit, Bill Johnson from Portland, and Frank Higgins from Kansas City. Many of the out of town playwrights are planning to attend the event. Directors for the slam include Kevin Berg, Bruce W. Hostetler, Liisa Ivary, Carolyn Myers and Marianne Wunch. Sandy McCallum and Shelley Austin will act as emcees, and cast includes Suzanne Ashland, Christopher Edwards, Liisa Ivary, Kevin Kenerly, Michael Meyer, Caroline Shaffer, Kate Sullivan and others. The Ashland New Plays Festival is in residence with Oregon Stage Works. Tickets to the event are $10 and are available at Paddington Station, or at the door. Seating is limited.
