What happens to the building? Many community members want to know what will happen to Briscoe Elementary once its doors close. A superintendent-appointed committee explored possible outcomes for the site, according to school officials. Meeting in March, the committee of four - all deal with commercial real estate - discussed the pros and cons of both selling and leasing the school and its surrounding grounds. Superintendent Juli Di Chiro said the committee will report its findings at the June 9 school board meeting, possibly with a recommendation. "We're hoping to generate some income fairly quickly for the district," Di Chiro said. "We need to think about using that resource to support the operating of the entire district." Di Chiro said at least 10 parties have expressed interest in the property. She declined to say who has submitted proposals. It has not been decided whether the property will be leased or sold, according to school officials. If sold, the 3.43 acre site and structure could garner $5 million to $6 million for the district. However, if it should lease, the district could realize $23,000 to $45,000 per month. After weeks of interviewing the Briscoe community, the majority said they would like to see the playground stay intact and the facility used for children. Marian Flood, a former Briscoe assistant cook for 25 years, added her two cents on the subject. "I'm hoping some private school or something like that would take it over. It would be a shame if a business came in," Flood said. Briscoe parent Jason Houk said how the district handles the sale or lease of the property will impact community relations. "If the district made a commitment to ensuring the building was used for the community and education, that would go a long way toward easing feelings," he said. "This neighborhood would not welcome commercial business into that site. There would be animosity and I think, some activism against it."
