Up to 400,000 people have lost their lives in Darfur since the government-sponsored genocide began in 2003. Two-and-a-half million people are displaced in Sudan and thousands of women and girls raped. We've heard the phrase “never again” regarding genocide, yet the death rate continues at 1,500 people per month in Sudan. If 1,500 people per month were being slaughtered in the U.S. or in Europe, there would be worldwide outrage and solidarity to condemn and prevent these acts. The African Union is doing what it can, but a strong international intervention is needed. Please urge President Bush and Congress to lead in international intervention by passing the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, which calls for increased support of the AU, stopping the Sudanese government “from using aircraft to attack civilians, bringing the killers and rapists to justice, and dispatching high-level U.S. diplomats to foster the peace process.” Dorcas Herr Ashland Oregonians need clean air How can two men create pollution and bad air for the rest of us to breathe? Easy: They use their money to influence lawmakers and lobby decision-makers for their own greedy purpose rather than the greater good. According to the Daily Tidings headline article Friday, July 8, Alan and Sid DeBoer together own 88 auto dealerships in Southern Oregon and the West. They oppose Gov. Ted Klulongoski’s enlightened plan to make Oregon’s auto emissions standards on par with California and invite Washington state to join in the effort. The DeBoers would rather put money in their pockets than clean air in your lungs. Don’t they have enough money? They claim auto costs will go up. Well, so what? What’s another $3,000 to $5,000 over the period of a car loan? Oregonians need clean air, we have a right to clean air and two men don’t have the right to decide whether or not we can have it! Don’t they breathe? How about their children or grandchildren? Don’t buy their cars! Call their dealerships and voice your opinion. Call Sen. Alan Bates and tell him not to kow-tow to auto dealers! It’s your air too! The skyrocketing sales of Toyota’s hybrid should be some indication to them of just what people want and are even willing to pay for. Sally McKirgan Ashland Terrorists got what they wanted Of course terrorists will attack only “soft” targets hoping, beyond death and destruction, to generate fear and paranoia. But their primary goal is to stimulate a response by the rulers of those attacked that will be brutal, repressive and irrational, the point being to exacerbate even further those preconditions that give rise to terrorists. In that sense, 9/11 was a brilliant stroke and the Bush administration’s invasion and occupation of Iraq has been exactly the blundering reaction the terrorists wanted. In dealing with terrorism, it is time for a change of both strategy and leadership in America. Gerald Cavanaugh Ashland Annexation wall is illegal One year ago, the International Court of Justice ruled Israel’s Annexation Wall illegal. Even the American judge on the court held that segments of the wall built to “protect” settlements are illegal as the settlements are (ipso facto) in violation of paragraph 6, Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The court unanimously (America, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Egypt) recognized that Israel has no territorial claims to Palestinian lands it occupied in 1967. Today the West Bank (a territory slightly smaller than Jackson County) is being fragmented into unconnected ghettos by a 600-mile (Ashland to Portland and back) monolith of racist greed. Not content with its land grabs of 1948, Israel is continuing to steal prime Palestinian agricultural land, aquifers and entire villages. Its serpentine wall juts deep into Palestinian territory to annex over 290 square miles of Palestine to Zionist Israel. Its loops and coils isolate another 60 square miles of Palestinian towns and villages and nearly 200,000 people into walled-in prison camps. Today the American taxpayer continues to subsidize the colonization of Palestine. Congress has even earmarked $50 million in “Palestinian aid” to help build the Wall. Just another cruel joke of American complicity in the ethnic cleansing of the native population of a small defenseless land.
