Letters to the editor: Timely article also informed "Boulevard work slows" What a timely article. I've been watching and wondering why we are down to one lane and no one is working on the street. It is frustrating to wonder why no one cares to inform us residents about the situation. So thank you for searching out the information. I can't say I was pleased with what certainly seems like poor planning somewhere along the way. But it is certainly better to know what is causing the delay. Thank you. Joan Dean, Ashland Briscoe teachers deserve thanks I attended Briscoe Elementary School years ago and believe it is the model of what a school should be; not only is the building picture perfect, but the teachers and staff of Briscoe are dedicated to helping young students learn and grow. I am deeply saddened by the closure of this wonderful school. If you have ever visited an elementary school, you will have noticed that there is a lot of material in those classrooms. The teachers at Briscoe must pack up everything in their current rooms, and then unpack the dozens upon dozens of boxes and completely set up new classrooms. For this they are being paid $12 an hour for two days only. I sure don't think that I could pack and unpack all that stuff on my own in two days. This means that Briscoe teachers will be spending a large portion of their summer vacations working without pay to carry out the wishes of the school board. I'd like to thank the teachers of Briscoe for bearing this unpleasant burden on behalf of the entire school district and community. If you are able, please offer to help Briscoe teachers with packing and unpacking; at the least thank all the Briscoe teachers you know for the work that they are doing. It would be nice if all the school board members and administrators could do the same. Jennifer Scott, Eugene Abortion ban is politically driven I am writing in opposition to the federal abortion ban that passed in Congress last week. This ban will outlaw medically necessary abortions needed by women who have serious medical conditions like kidney failure, diabetes and risk of stroke. The Supreme Court has already ruled, in Stenberg v. Carhart, that women, in consultation with their families and doctors "not politicians" should make decisions about the best way to protect the health and life of a woman. And this ban, as passed by the House contains no exception for cases in which a woman's health is at risk once again making it unconstitutional. This politically driven, unconstitutional abortion ban being used by anti-choice members of Congress to influence election politics and advance their long term-goal of overturning Roe V. Wade - should be struck down. The fact that there is no such thing as a "partial-birth abortion" in medical terms alone should demonstrate the over-reaching, vague and dangerous parameters of this legislation. Women and their doctors should be making medical decisions based on their individual circumstances, not on the scare-tactic rhetoric of the right wing, anti-choice lawmakers.
