Steve Sutfin | For the Tidings ‘The Heidi Chronicles’ Camelot production examines the changing roles of women from the baby boomers to the present Camelot Theatre Company presents “The Heidi Chronicles,” winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award. Funny, touching, and written with rare grace and sensitivity, “The Heidi Chronicles” is an examination of the baby boomers from the socially and politically activist sixties to the success-oriented eighties — a time during which the status of American women underwent profound, and sometimes unsettling, change, according to Artistic Director Livia Genise. “This is an important play for women, their daughters, and the men who love them,” Genise said. Priscilla Quinby, Left, and Livia Genise star in “The Heidi Chronicles.” Steve Sutfin | For the Tidings Made into an Emmy Award-winning teleplay in 1995, “The Heidi Chronicles” originally starred Joan Allen. “Wasserstein's work is character driven and the characters are funny, wise and all too human,” Genise said. “It's not just about Heidi's search for her identity as a woman. It's about marriage as a rite of passage rather than an affair of the heart, about feeling like a role player in your own life, about finding yourself unhappy, unfulfilled and frightened of growing old alone. “Heidi questions so many things in the course of this wise play: Does what makes you a person also keep you from being a person and are our friends really our families? ‘The Heidi Chronicles’ especially looks at life verses art history and this is what sets the story into motion: How are women to find meaning in a world that ignores their existence?” Theatre veteran Paul Jones directs this production of “The Heidi Chronicles.” Jones recently retired as a theater professor from College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif., after 27 years of teaching, directing, designing sets and lights, public relations, box office, the department chair and occasionally acting and directing. He recently appeared in Camelot's production of “Judgment at Nuremburg.” Starring in the role of Heidi is Equity actress Livia Genise. A former Broadway actress, Genise has appeared in more than 150 plays and musicals. At Camelot, she has starred in “Master Class,” “The Music Lesson,” “Zorba!” “The Wisdom of Eve” and in “Spotlight” shows on Patsy Cline and Bonnie Raitt. Priscilla Quinby co-stars in the role of Susan, Heidi's best friend. An Equity actress for more than 31 years, Quinby last appeared at Camelot as Sarah in “The Sisters Rosensweig,” as Peggy Lee in “Spotlight on Peggy Lee” and as the Widow in “Zorba!” Local Realtor Bruce Lorange plays Heidi's love interest, Scoop Rosenbaum. A graduate of the Pasadena Playhouse, Lorange has worked as a professional actor in film, theater and TV in Los Angeles for more than 20 years. Last seen at Camelot in the role of Merv in “The Sisters Rosensweig,” Lorange has appeared in locally in “Lettuce and Lovage” and “Shadowlands.” Architect Heiland Hoff portrays Peter, Heidi's other best friend. Diana Warner has been performing for over 30 years and her credits include “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” “Godspell,” “Into the Woods,” “South Pacific,” “My Fair Lady,” “The Sound of Music” and “Sweeney Todd” at Rogue Music Theatre. She recently appeared in Camelot's productions of “Enchanted April,” “The Sisters Rosensweig” and “Oliver!” Kaitie Warner is an Ashland native recently returned from studying opera at Pacific Lutheran University, where she was seen in “The Magic Flute.” She starred as Lili in “Carnival,” at Camelot, in “The Pirates of Penzance” for Rogue Opera, and at Ashland High School, she appeared as Hodel in “Fiddler on the Roof” and Kim in “Bye Bye Birdie.” Amanda Murphy returns to Camelot after appearing in “Carnival” and “Judgment at Nuremburg.” A former Bay Area actress, Murphy also appeared locally in “The Boy Who Talked to Whales.” Freese has worked on-stage at Camelot in “Master Class” and “Oliver” and has stage managed numerous productions there. Set design is by Camelot's resident tech director, Karl Beckman, who recently designed “Judgement at Nuremburg.” Costumes are by Camelot's wardrobe mistress Emily Ehrlich Inget, who recently costumed both “Judgment” and “Children of Eden.” Lighting Design is by Camelot company member Travis Goodmand; sound is by Camelot's resident sound designer, Peter Spring. “The Heidi Chronicles” previews Aug. 31 and September 1 at 8 p.m., opens Sept. 2 and runs through Oct. 2. All Friday, Saturday and Monday performances are at 8 p.m. and all Sundays at 2 p.m., with a special pay-what-you-can performance on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Tickets are $10 for previews. All other regular performances are $14 for students and seniors and $16 for adults. Tickets are available through the Camelot box office (located at the corner of Talent Ave. and Main St. in Talent) and at Grocery Outlet in Medford. Reserved seats are available at the box office only for an additional $2 per ticket. To reserve tickets, call the box office at 535-5250.
