92_i___A Letter to All Students and Faculty Members Holding Draft Card
Tomorrow, the anniversary of AbrahamLincoln&#39;s birthday, several thousand American men are going to attempt to emancipate themselves from peacetime conscriptionby publicly ridding themselves of their draft credentials,either by mailing them to the President or burning rm inpublic bonfires. This sounds like a foolish, crackpot schemebut it&#39;s not. It is much worse than that -- It is a form ofcivil disobedience. That&#39;s something rather old-fashionedbut in times like these, when America&#39;s government is divertingthe major portion of its expenditures to armaments and ourmilitary leaders are trying to fasten permanent peacetimeconscription on the nation, then, as Thoreau said, "It is not too soon for an honest man to rebel." .
These men are certainly honest and sincere,and they are rebelling, not only against what they consider aviolation of personal liberty, but against the slow and deadlydrift towards World War III which an international armamentrace and universal conscription make almost inevitable.

He resides in the State of California housing area
near the elementary school at Death Valley. The house is a
duplex and the other half is occupied by Mr. and Mrs. DON BRAY.
DON BRAY teaches high school at Shoshone, California. They
moved into the area in about September, 1966. ABBEY lives at
the residence with his wife, JUDY. They have no children and
their mailing address is P. O. Box 2&6.
He is employed as a school bus driver for the
elementary school at Death Valley, and also serves as
maintenance man for the school. He spends a great deal of
time working as a free-lance writer on his own. Prior to
arriving in Death Valley, ABBEY was employed as a fire _
lookout at Lassen National California from about June,
1966 to September, 1966. stated that -.11: August, 1966, _
ABBEY sent a letter reque g mployment as a part-time
ranger in Death Valley but he was never hired for the Job. &#39;
Bis wife, JUDY ABBEY, is emloyed as an elementary teacher
at the Death Valley Elementary School.

around he area occasionally, he would not know he was in the
area. He said that ABBEY does not take part in any community
activities or social gatherings and remains to himelf.
ABBEY drives a Chevrolet, Greenbriar  cab over
engine panel!, white in color, bearing New Jersey licenseJIT #50. &#39;
stated that in his opinion, Mr. and Mrs.
EDWARD ABBEY wi 1 leave the Death Valley area when school
closes about 6/15/67. He said that most of the teachers
leave after one year and they never live in Death Valley
during the summer months.
A review of the file reflects ABBEY is not retained
on the Security Index or Reserve Index, A or Bcof the Los Angeles
Division, nor has any information been developed which would
warrant his retention. No further action remains to be taken
in this case.
