NOTE:
This is the case involving the bombing or the 16th
Street Baptist Church,,Birmingham, Alabama, September 15, 1963
in which tour Negro girls were killed. We immediately launched
a most extensive type 01 investigation of this and related
12/7/64! that "This investigation
was prejudiced by premature arrests made by the Alabama Highway
Patrol, and, consequently, it has not yet been possible to
obtain evidence or confessions that would insure successful
prosecution, although the FBI has identified a small group of
Klansmen believed to be responsible!

This is the case involving the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist
Church, Birmingham, Alabama, on 9/ 15/ 63. Four young Negro girls were
killed, 16 other persons were injured, and damage to the church amounted to
approximately $30, 000. A full investigatidn was instituted immediately;
however, our investigation was prejudiced when the Alabama Highway Patrol
prematurely arrested the principal suspects. We are still conducting vigorous
investigation to develop admissible evidence which would warrant Federal '
prosecution. ,

Birmingham has recommended a thorough interview
as an economy measure requested authority to send a Birmingham
thoroughly familiar with instant and related matters to Greenville to
interview him following completion of the present trial. Birmingham
pointed out that it would take a Columbia Division Agent a matter of weeks
to properly prepare for such interview in view of the complexity of the
cases involved and the necessity of thorough knowledge of all facets, including
the geographical areas involved. The cost of travel has been determined to
be approximately $50 and this, plus per diem, would be the only expenses
involved. .

SUMMARY
Investigation in this case this week developed '
information that WILLIAM ROSS KEITH, former member of
Eastview Klavern #13, UKA, a marginal suspect in this case
and close associate of primary suspect in instant case,
died the first part of Hay, 1968, from various illnesses
with which he was plagued for several years. KEITH had been
interviewed on many occasions in connection with this and
other related bombings with only limited success. It has
long been ielt that he was not directly responsible for this
bombing but did participate in diversionary.tactics inconnection with at least one other bombing. Z
It is not known at this time whether his death ma 1;
induce anyone to talk concerning this case, hut that possibility I

and submit such a summary by letter on a monthly basis,
the first of which should reach the Bureau on or before
3-1-69. y

NOTE:
This case involves the bombing of the 16th Street
Baptist Church on 9-16-63, resulting in the death of
four young Negro girls, personal injury to 16 other
persons and approximately $30,000 damage to the church.1--ac-
All logical leads have been covered and our con-
tinuing investigation consistsof coverage of the activities
of prime suspects and their associatcsn through sources and
informants in an attempt to develop admissible evidence.
The weekly airtel sumaries ref to above no longer
appears to be warranted.
