The RiverDogs (16-10) posted the twinbill victory by scores of 5-2 and 14-5. Campbell (2-0) went seven innings and struck out two in the Game 1 win. The lefthander turned in his longest outing of the season after being limited because of a sore elbow. "Casey kept his pitch count down," RiverDogs coach Mike Mayben said. "He threw a lot of strikes and kept them off balance." Advertisement Southern Oregon broke a 2-2 tie with the go ahead run in the fifth inning. Derrick Draper walked, stole second and went to third on the play off a throwing error by Suns catcher Cole Miller. Draper came home on Ken Halpin’s RBI single. Halpin led the attack with a 3-for-4 effort and Steve DeClerck added two hits. In the nightcap, Halpin and Ryan Garrett both went 2-for-3 to spark the RiverDogs 13-hit attack. "We kept our momentum going throughout the doubleheader," said Mayben. "We’re hitting throughout our lineup. We’re putting guys on base and moving them around." She’s taking care of the ball and making all the plays." Strictly Softball, which has players from all over Oregon, will advance to the national tournament in Garland, Texas, July 28-Aug. 3. ASA 16-UNDER A STATE TOURNAMENT — At Salem, Black Tornado Fastpitch finished third out of 20 teams in the three-day tournament at Wallace Marine Park. The Black Tornado took a 3-0 record into Sunday, but lost to the Sherwood Fireballs 4-3 before being eliminated by eventual state champion Silver Bullets of Portland, 2-0 in nine innings. The Black Tornado secured a spot in the national tournament because the Silver Bullets had already qualified and Sherwood can’t go because of previous committments. The national tournament is July 28-Aug. 3 in Midland, Texas. The team needs to raise $12,000 to cover expenses for the national tournament. Donations can be made out to Black Tornado Fastpitch and sent to 1881 Filmore, Medford 97504, attention: Janice Gould. Kendra Strahm pitched all five games for the Black Tornado in the tournament because the team’s other pitcher, Mallorie Hoover, broke her finger in a collision against Eagle Point on Wednesday. Strahm only gave up four hits in the extra-inning duel against the Silver Bullets. "There was a lot of pressure on Kendra," Black Tornado coach Brent Barry said. "She knew she was the only pitcher we had." On Friday, the Black Tornado defeated the Scorpions of Salem 11-1. The Black Tornado defeated the Sunset Spirit of Beaverton, 5-1, and the Red Heat of Gresham, 1-0, on Saturday. Darcy Cordell hit the ball consistently in the tournament and Deni Rowley did a good job as leadoff hitter, according to Barry. "For the most part, we executed well in this tournament," said Barry. "We played good defense behind our pitcher." Little League DISTRICT 8 TOURNAMENT — At Brookings, the Medford Nationals hopes of advancing the boys 11-12-year-old tournament were diminished with a 2-1 loss to host Brookings The Nationals fell to 1-2 in pool play and will face the Medford Federals (1-2) in their final bracket game today at 6 p.m. Patrick Thibeault pitched a strong game in the loss to Brookings.
