Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 3, 2005 Local Report SOU football scrimmage Saturday at Spiegelberg Southern Oregon University’s spring football practice sessions culminate Saturday at Spiegelberg Stadium with the fourth-annual Raider intrasquad game. The controlled scrimmage is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start. Admissions is free but donations will be accepted. The event is a homecoming of sorts for former Medford prep standouts Boomer Marshall (a quarterback from South Medford), Curt Stout (a running back from North Medford) and Mike Olson (a receiver from North Medford). "This is a great opportunity to showcase our team in Medford, and we want to emphasize our strong connections within the Rogue Valley," acting head coach Shay McClure said. "It will be a fun afternoon." After the game, the team will hold a barbecue and a silent auction. One auction item will be an NFL football autographed by former SOU All-American Dusty McGrorty and his current St. Louis Rams teammates, Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson. Southern Oregon returns 34 letterwinners and 12 starters from last year’s 3-6 team. Advertisement Larkin, Holman to meet in bowling battle of the sexes A benefit "battle-of-the-sexes" bowling showdown will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Roxy Ann Lanes. Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Marshall Holman will compete against Lela Larkin, the center’s owner and the only woman to bowl perfect games at Roxy, Lava Lanes and the defunct Medford Lanes. The confrontation, reminiscent of the Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs tennis match in 1973, will raise money for Kids Health Connection, an elementary school based health center serving schools in Medford and Phoenix. Admission to the match is free. Beaver baseball team rises to a No. 4 national ranking CORVALLIS — The Oregon State baseball team, fresh off a winning weekend against Arizona State, has jumped to No. 4 in rankings issued by Baseball America magazine. The Beavers (32-8, 11-4 Pacific-10 Conference) are also ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 9 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper rankings. The No 4. slot is the highest spot Oregon State has ever attained in a national baseball poll. The Collegiate Baseball newspaper ranked the Beavers fifth on March 29, 1963. The Beavers, who took two of three from Arizona State over the weekend, are second in the Pacific-10 standings, one game behind Arizona. Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, a junior from Madras, leads the Pacific-10 in batting with a .442 average. He also leads the conference in on-base percentage and stolen bases. Sophomore right-handers Jonah Nickerson of Oregon City (1.17) and Dallas Buck of Newberg (2.10) lead the conference in earned run average. Ducks get 6-6 point guard transferring from Xavier EUGENE — Churchill Odia, a 6-foot-6 freshman point guard who played last season at Xavier, has signed on to play at Oregon, coach Ernie Kent announced Monday. Odia, from Lagos, Nigeria, is expected to enroll in classes at Oregon this summer. He will sit out and redshirt the 2005-06 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules and will have three seasons of eligibility beginning in 2006-07. Odia was a member of the 2004 Nigerian national team that played in the Olympic qualifying tournament. He was also a part of the 2003 Nigerian junior national team that lost to Kent’s United States’ team at the World Championships in Greece. In a limited role, Odia averaged 1.6 points and 0.9 rebounds for Xavier last season, playing an average of 8.8 minutes in 25 games. He had highs of seven points against Lehigh and five assists against Creighton.
