A Medford man is in jail for allegedly sexually assaulting and severely beating his 18-month-old stepson Thursday afternoon. Matthew Karl Hyrup, 27, of the 200 block of South Columbus Avenue, was being held Friday in the Jackson County Jail on first-degree assault and first-degree sexual penetration charges, both of which are Measure 11 crimes. His bail was set at $2 million. Medical personnel from Mercy Flights arrived at the home at 4:22 p.m. Thursday, responding to a call of a child in distress. The 18-month-old boy was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where doctors found both internal and external injuries all over his body and determined the child had been severely beaten and sexually assaulted. The child was airlifted to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland for further treatment, police said. He was listed in critical but stable condition. After diagnosing the abuse, doctors contacted Medford police, who began an investigation. The child had been in Hyrup's care while the child's mother, 24, had been out for a couple hours, police said. The child's mother was the one who called 9-1-1 after discovering the injuries when she came home. She and Hyrup married two weeks ago, police said. "The investigation indicates that Hyrup was responsible for the injuries," said a press release issued by Medford police. Lt. Mike Budreau said Hyrup was arrested without incident. "He was cooperative," Budreau said. The investigation of the incident is ongoing, and the Department of Human Services' Child Welfare Division is involved. Hyrup was convicted of methamphetamine delivery charges in 2006 and possession charges in 2010, court records show. "Honestly, trying to come up with a motive for something like this is going to be difficult," Budreau said.
