Trailing 59-56 with four minutes left in the game, sixth-ranked South Medford rallied for a 66-62 road victory over Intermountain Conference favorite Mountain View. "To our kids’ credit, down the wire they stepped up and made the plays and won the game," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy. None came up bigger than junior post Brent Johnson, who scored the Panthers’ final six points after Gus Haugen’s 3-pointer gave the Cougars a 62-60 lead with two minutes remaining. Johnson converted a three-point play to put South ahead 63-62 at about the one-minute mark. After a defensive stop, the Panthers set up a play for Johnson, who made a layin and was awarded an intentional foul with 10 seconds to go. Johnson missed the free throw, but was fouled again on the Panthers’ ensuing possession and made one of his two free throws to complete the scoring. Advertisement Johnson finished with a team-high 15 points and added five rebounds. "(Johnson) played much better later in the game when we needed him to," said Murphy. Junior reserve Myles Daley provided the Panthers a needed boost with 10 points and five rebounds. "Early on when we were struggling, Myles hit two big 3s to give us a spark off the bench," said Murphy. The game was tied at 19 apiece after the first quarter and 34-all at halftime. South Medford (2-1) forged ahead 54-52 going into the final period. Led by Jon Weaver’s six boards, the Panthers outrebounded Mountain View, 33-22. Mountain View’s Simon Currie posted a game-high 20 points. "In the first half we made some silly mistakes," said Murphy. "We challenged our kids real hard at halftime and they responded." Trailing by 12 at the half, North Medford (1-1) closed the gap in the final two periods to give itself a chance to tie the game with three seconds left before a missed 3-pointer sealed the game. Senior point guard Drew Herrera had 12 points and six assists for the Black Tornado, while fellow seniors John Berger and Ty Ryan had 17 and 15 points, respectively. Ben Running added nine rebounds for North Medford, which plays today at Mountain View. David Hinchman scored 19 points and Kyle Blankenship added 16 for Bend (3-1). The Cavemen (3-1) made seven of their eight treys in the first half, with Dastrup sinking four, to take a 33-17 lead at intermission. Dastrup registered a team-high 19 points and had four assists. Hidden Valley’s Josh Gotfried handed out 12 assists and Wil Dillon grabbed seven rebounds and three steals. Thomas McCarthy led the scoring for Crook County with 19 and Kyle Huntley added 13. On the ensuing possession, Gold Beach’s attempt was off target but Lander tipped in the miss and was fouled to provide the difference.
