Since You Asked: 'Prancer' has gone back home to artist Jan 01, 2011 12:00 AM A A What happened to the beautiful bronzish sculpture of a prancing colt, mane flying that used to be on the corner of North Third and East California streets in downtown Jacksonville? The larger horse and rider sculpture that seems to be part of a series is still in front of the old museum, but the prancing colt appears to be gone. — Shirley W., Medford area The prancing colt sculpture, appropriately enough titled "Prancer," was recently returned to its creator. The sculpture by Rogue River artist Jan Van Ek was part of an art-promotion program started more than a year ago by the city to allow artists to display outdoor art for sale, with the dual purpose of adorning the city and raising a small amount of revenue. The city receives a 5 percent cut of any artwork sold. As many as 15 sculptures by a variety of artists have been on display at any given time during the past year downtown and along nearby hiking trails. Prancer and his flowing mane were at Third and California in downtown for about a year. The sculpture, made of bronze as you correctly guessed, was one of 10 editions Van Ek made. All have galloped off to buyers except that one. Prancer had been on display for about a year, and Van Ek said she thought it was time to bring him home.
