There is no law against owning a pit bull. As far as local rules go, a bad dog is a bad dog, police Lt. Tim George said. "I’ve seen some weiner dogs out there that will tear your arm off if you put it inside a car window," George said. "Then you have larger dogs that wouldn’t hurt a fly." The Medford Municipal Code does speak to the issue of controlling dogs (section 5.600), but the rules address penalties any dog owner will face if their pet chases a vehicle or person, defecates on public property, scatters garbage or "runs at large," if it’s a female dog in heat. Jackson County dog ordinances have more bite, as far as restrictions and penalties for pet owners, but they too address canines in general. The county’s dog-regulation ordinance says it is illegal for a person to keep "any dog" that assaults or attacks a person or domestic animal.
