Mail Tribune 100, May 31, 1922 By Alissa Corman May 31, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago May 31, 1922 1,303 DOGS REGISTERED IN JACKSON COUNTY, MUTT POPULAR NAME There are 1,303 dogs in Jackson County according to the licenses issued by the county clerk’s office, and the most popular name for the town canine is “Mutt,” and for the country mongrel it is “Shep.” The records show that a large majority of the dogs have no name, but some of them have hightoned and unusual monikers. One Applegate dog bears the distinguished name of “Hoover,” and an Ashland mongrel bears the ancient and honorable appellation of “Socrates.” A Medford dog comes for meat scraps when addressed as “Elizabeth G.,” and still another has the German title of “Schmitt.” “Lover,” is the affectionate name of one dog. The other names most popular for dogs are: Rip, Rover, Snookums, Toots, Trixie, Trilby, Watch, Buster, Bones, Foxy, Snoozer, Jack, Zipp, Jip, Jim, Towser, Rags, Jazz, Joker, Whip, Bruno, Silas, Add, Jeff, Jiggs, Polly, Dan, Dave, Baby, and all the other old standards. OLD OFFICIALS TO BE IN CHARGE AT C. LAKE THIS YEAR It will be welcome news to the people of Medford and of the state generally, as well as to the general run of visitors to Crater Lake that the hotel and other Crater National Park concessions will be operated this coming season, as last year, by the Crater Lake company, which is composed of Portland and Medford men. R. W. Price of Portland, one of the officials of the Crater Lake company, will be the general manager as last year, and Vernon Vawter and George T. Collins, of Medford, will continue as vice president and treasurer, respectively, and the same crew as operated the hotel and transportation concession last season will be on the job the coming season. The above news was brought back by Messrs. Collins and Vawter from the meeting they attended Monday at Portland of the Crater Lake company with Alfred L. Parkhurst, holder of the Crater Lake concessions, from whom the company held an option of purchase and operated the concessions by a special agreement with Parkhurst last season. The company will operate the concessions the coming season by an agreement with Parkhurst, which was only reached Monday night and Messrs. Vawter and Collins then departed for home without learning the details of further arrangements with Parkhurst as regards possible sale to the company. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
