Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Back in the saddle Eagle Point rider posts top qualifying mark in saddle bronc riding at Wild Rogue By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — Randy Jones was clearly the hometown favorite Saturday night in front of a packed house at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. And the former Eagle Point resident didn’t disappoint, delivering a high-qualifying score of 76 in saddle bronc riding at the annual Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo. Jones, who moved to Fort Klamath four months ago, notched the high round atop Fort McLoud. "He’s been at this longer than I have," said Jones of the 20-year-old bronc. "He’s a little tricky to ride but he’s a fun one. He’s an ol’ rodeo vet." Jones, the seventh-ranked rider in the Columbia River Circuit, and No. 17-rated Chance Millin of Powell Butte were the only competitors to complete the 8-second ride over the last two nights. Advertisement Other winners Saturday night were Lee Lantz of Molalla with an 84 in bareback riding; Paul Cope of Nampa, Idaho, with a time of 8.2 seconds in calf roping; Mike George (Oakdale, Calif.) with a fast time of 6.6 seconds in steer wrestling; Larry Goss and Jaye Kuebler (13.5 seconds) in team roping; and Hermiston’s Chandra Grover (14.06) in barrel racing. In bull riding, Zeb Lanham, of Sweet, Idaho, entered the contest ranked 17th. The 21-year-old lived up to his high-billing with a top score of 89 riding Mickey. The narrow victory — Greg Fuller took second with an 88 — is one of many for Lanham since he took up bull riding professionally three years ago. "I grew up on a ranch, so I started riding bulls when I was real young," Lanham said. "It’s a thrill. I’ve been hooked ever since." Lanham escaped injury in the rough-and-tumble sport until a nasty spill in June put him in the hospital with broken ribs, facial fractures and a broken jaw. He then broke his foot six weeks ago in an event in Spokane, Wash., and is just now rounding back into form. Those setbacks, however, haven’t deterred Lanham. "I’m a cowboy," explained Lanham, who will compete in the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in early December. "(Getting injured) is part of it sometimes." Jones, just 31 years old, is a veteran of the rodeo circuit. "I’ve been doing this since I was 15," said Jones, who trains horses at the Pete Bourdet Ranch. "I used to do about 100 rodeos a year, but now I’m down to about 30 or 40. It wears you down a little." Jones has dabbled in different riding venues but ultimately settled on saddle bronc riding. "There are some guys who can do multiple events," he said. "I’ve done a little of everything but saddle bronc is the most fun for me." Up next for Jones is the Columbia River Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals held Nov. 18-20 in Redmond. "That’s a big one," said Jones. "Being part of a rodeo is the greatest experience," he added. "You go to neat places and meet different people. It’s like a big family." The three-day event, billed the Biggest Little Rodeo in the West, concludes today. Doors open at noon and the competition starts at 2 p.m. Admission is $14 at the door. Kids 12-and-under will be admitted at half price.
