Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 7, 2005 SOU splits with OIT ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University and Oregon Institute of Technology softball teams battled to a doubleheader split Wednesday afternoon, but Raider all-star pitcher Miranda Gillaspie ensured the Raiders won the most meaningful of the two contests. Gillaspie, the reigning Cascade Conference pitcher-of-the-year, tossed a two-hitter to help SOU nip OIT, 1-0, in Game 1, a league fray originally scheduled for March 26 that was postponed due to rain. The Owls, however, staved off a twin bill sweep with a 6-3 triumph in the non-conference nightcap. "Winning two would have been nice," Raider coach Larry Binney said, "but we got the game that mattered the most." Despite mustering only four hits off Owl ace Laura Delplanche, the Raiders (16-14, 5-4 CC) recorded the lone run of Game 1 in the third inning when Kim Kraxberger led off with a flare to left field that bounced off the glove of a diving Kelsi Haylett for a double. Following Allesha Spradling’s sacrifice bunt, senior all-star Kara Ray lined a sacrifice fly to center to score Krazberger from third base. Delplanche (7-7) went on to retire 10 consecutive batters between the third and seventh, but Gillaspie quelled the lone major Owl comeback bid when she enticed Kindel Thompson to ground out with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Advertisement Gillaspie improved to 7-1 against OIT over the past two seasons by retiring the side in order in the seventh. "Miranda pitched a heck of a game," Binney said. "She had hitters off-balance and threw with confidence — enough confidence to make one run stand up against a very good offensive team." In Game 2, Southern staked a 2-0 lead on Katie Lee’s two-out, two-strike, two-run, second-inning double, and Raider freshman hurler Alicia Caudill (3-4) operated with a 2-1 lead into the sixth before OIT (14-9, 4-5) broke through for five runs to make a winner out of freshman pitcher Sharlie McAdams. The Techsters loaded the bases with one out, but after Grace Fagan struck out, Delplanche delivered a two-run double followed by a two-run single by Kristiann Kinsman. The thunderous frame ended only after Thompson’s RBI double off reliever Julianne Cree. McAdams, also a member of the Owl soccer team, improved to 7-2 by allowing only three earned runs on six hits. The outcome spoiled a 2-for-2 performance by Raider designated player Tanisha Burch, and Kraxberger also collected two hits (in three official at-bats) in the doubleheader. Thompson was the lone Owl with a multi-hit afternoon (2-for-4). Southern went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, but Tech sophomore shortstop Amanda Doherty, the 2004 league MVP, and its top hitter, junior Lisa Erwert, went a combined 2-for- 11. The Raiders return to action Saturday in Ashland with a non-conference tripleheader against defending California Pacific Conference champion Notre Dame de Namur.
