The Pirates, who lost only to champion Estacada (75) and runner-up Thurston (49) in duals, finished third with 43 points. Phoenix’s Zack Glanz won all seven of his matches at 130 pounds to claim that weight class. Pirate Nick Amuchastegui, who lost in the waning seconds of the tournament’s marquee match at 140, and teammates Kris Kaufman (125) and Brian Clark (135) each placed second. Phoenix also got a fine effort at 103 from sophomore Shyne Toureville, who returned to competition from a broken hand. Advertisement Amuchastegui is ranked No. 2 in the state, behind only Josh Stalcup of Estacada. The two sophomores met in the final match of the tournament, providing a possible preview of the state finals at the end of the season. With the score tied at 3-3 and about 10 seconds left, Stalcup recorded a takedown for a 5-3 win. "We thought we had the takedown," said Phoenix coach Harry Mondale, "and they gave it to the other guy. They were all tangled up. It was quite a finish to the tournament." Estacada routed the Pirates, 63-6, but Mondale was heartened because a handful of matches were very close. "I was pretty happy with all our kids," he said. "Estacada is ranked No.1 in the state, so to wrestle the tough matches that we did, I thought our kids did a real credible job for this time of year."
