Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 17, 2005 Medford man found safe near Mount Hood summit By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A 19-year-old Medford man is on his way home after he was reported overdue Tuesday night from a climb on Mount Hood. Brian Lester Thibeault, a 2004 South Medford High School graduate, was almost 100 feet from the 11,225-foot mountain’s summit when Clackamas County rescuers found him, officials said. He was reported missing by two snowboarders he spoke with at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. The snowboarders advised him not to make the climb alone, but Thibeault was undeterred, Clackamas County sheriff’s Detective Wendi Babst said. The snowboarders told Thibeault that if he did not return to the Timberline Lodge by 4 p.m. Tuesday they would contact police. They reported him missing to lodge employees after they saw his car in the parking lot Tuesday evening, Babst said. Lester Thibeault, Brian’s father, said his son wasn’t injured and was coming home to Medford Wednesday night. Advertisement "He’s fine," Thibeault said of his son, "He wished he made it to the top, but he didn’t." The rescue team had to identify Thibeault by his car registration because he did not fill out a wilderness permit before making the climb. Wilderness permits, provided by the lodge, allows a climber to outline his or her route and expected return time from Mount Hood. Rescue workers use them to find overdue climbers, Babst said. Around 11 volunteers combed the mountain in search of Thibeault. They found him Wednesday morning in good condition near the summit. Babst believes that Thibeault did not believe himself to be in need of rescue. Babst said a rescue mission would have been unnecessary had Thibeault filled out a wilderness permit at the lodge. "It was something that may have been avoided if he filled out the proper paperwork," Babst said. Those who don’t have a permit on Mount Hood could face a $150 fine, Babst said. "We love people coming to Mount Hood, but we don’t like going to look for them," Babst said.
