Phoenix registered its third straight shutout with a 5-0 victory over previously unbeaten North Valley Tuesday. Phoenix also has wins over defending conference champion Hidden Valley and Henley. "Our defense is really the star of the show," Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner said. And defenders John Chavez and Brian Bones are the leaders of that unit. "They have been real aggressive on the attack and in transition," said Flenner. "They’re timing has been real good." Defenders Doug Lavagnino and Nathan Burst have also contributed to the stellar effort. North Valley, which led the Pirates by a one-half game entering the match, proved to be a stubborn foe early. The game was scoreless until the 32nd minute, when Adam Detrick planted a left-footed bender from 18 yards away inside the far post. Jaime Escabedo assisted on the opening goal. Matt Seeley gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead four minutes later on an unassisted score from about 12 yards. "I was relieved to have those two goals," said Flenner. "Momentum was certainly trying to find a home right then." The Pirates (4-0, 3-0 Skyline) broke the game open in the second half on two goals by junior midfielder John Feeney sandwiched around a Kyle McKinnis goal that Feeney assisted on. Phoenix outshot the Knights, 15-3. "They were definitely motivated to give us a match," said Flenner. "They had the top spot in the league and weren’t going to roll over." HIDDEN VALLEY 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, Dillon Borta netted two goals, giving him eight in five games for Hidden Valley. Borta opened the scoring on a penalty kick at the 12th minute. The Mustangs (3-2, 3-1 Skyline) upped their advantage to 2-0 on Daron McGlothin’s goal off an assist from Jake Supola 25 minutes into the half. Borta completed the scoring in the second half with freshman Shay Campbell getting the assist. The Mustang defense was led by Torrent Saunders and T.J. Thayer. ST. MARY’S 5, MAZAMA 1 — Michael Staver’s three consecutive goals propelled St. Mary’s (3-1, 1-0 Dist. 3) to the non-league victory. Staver, who leads the Crusaders with six goals, converted at the 35th minute to send the Crusaders into halftime with a 3-1 lead. In the second half, the junior forward scored on an assist from Duncan MacDiarmid, then added an unassisted goal. Austin Grant opened the scoring for St. Mary’s in the third minute on a penalty kick. Grant assisted on Sean Snider’s goal at the 29th minute to give St. Mary’s a 2-0 lead. The Crusader defense was spearheaded by MacDiarmid and fullback Michael Fiddler. St. Mary’s had 29 shots on goal to just three for Mazama.
