U-14 Rapids move into semifinals The Rogue Rapids, an under-14 boys soccer team from Medford, advanced to the semifinals of the Snickers State Cup by winning its final quarterfinals game Sunday. The Rapids, a Rogue Valley Soccer Club team, defeated the Portland-based PCU Illusion 2-1 at Fichtner-Mainwaring fields in Medford. Forward Corey O'Neill scored the tying goal on a breakaway midway through the second half and followed that by stopping three penalty kicks and watching a fourth go wide in the shootout. O'Neill was in the goal after the Rapids' goalkeeper, Geordan Neville, injured his shoulder in the final seconds of regulation play while making a diving save. Spencer Hunter and Erich Hangartner scored on penalty kicks as the Rapids prevailed 2-0 in the shootout. The Rapids opened play Saturday in the four-team quarterfinal bracket by defeating West Linn-Wilsonville 2-0, with Brian Klenke scoring both goals on headers off corner kicks. The defense of Jason Matthews, Richard Snapp, Andrew Egan and Hunter limited the opposition to one shot -- a penalty kick -- for the entire game. Neville blocked the penalty kick to preserve the shutout. The Rapids lost the second game of the weekend, 2-1, to West Villa (Gresham) Thunder on Sunday. O'Neill scored the Rapids' lone goal on an assist from Matthews, tying the game at 1-1 midway through the second half, but West Villa responded two minutes later, heading in a ball that caromed off the cross bar after deflection on a corner kick. The Rapids advance to the semifinals as the second team in the bracket and will face the first-place team from a second bracket. Other members of the team are Caleb Berkey, Ryan Burt, Eric Connors, Joel Connors, Noah Lewis, Adam Machado, Eric Rubey, Sean Snider and Michael Staver.
