Hood GRESHAM — The Southern Oregon RiverDogs amateur baseball team continued its weekend struggles at the plate, but the stingy pitching effort by starter Brent Foster carried the load. Foster allowed just five hits and tossed a complete-game shutout on only 86 pitches as the RiverDogs slipped past the Mt. Hood Cardinals 1-0 on Sunday. Southern Oregon, which managed just one run on Saturday and came out on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep by the Portland Kings, scored the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth. Brad Bailey reached on a one-out error then stole second and moved to third on Ryan Garrett’s infield single. Advertisement Garrett was caught off first base on a pick-off attempt but the throw from first to second sailed into the outfield, allowing Bailey to come home with the game’s only run. The Cardinals threatened in the bottom half, but a strong defensive play by rightfielder Derrick Draper stymied the Mt. Hood attack. A leadoff single and sacrifice bunt moved Aaron Coiteux to second with one out. Draper raced down Scott Nelson’s shallow fly in foul territory then zinged an accurate one-hop throw to third-baseman Brian Stock to hold Coiteux on second. Foster, following a wild pitch that would have plated Coiteux if not for Draper’s throw but instead moved him to third, retired the final batter on a fly ball to left to run his record to 1-0. Garrett and Dan Bruce each had to hits for Southern Oregon, which improved to 7-5 on the season. Phil Ouellette extended his hit streak to 10 games with a single to lead off the game.
