Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 5, 1915 MISSING DIAMOND IN CARPET SWEEPER The $90 diamond stud belonging to John Rozamarek, telegraph operator, missing since Sunday, was found by the chambermaid of the Holland Hotel in the carpet sweeper Tuesday afternoon. It was reported to the police by the owner that the diamond had been stolen, when he returned from a ball game. The loss created considerable excitement, and when the maid went to empty the sweeper, there was the lost jewel shining in the dirt. MEDFORD ELKS ENTERTAIN 500 Medford Elkdom entertained at a smoker in their new clubrooms last night in royal fashion, and lived up to their reputation as good fellows. It was the most successful lodge gathering in the history of the valley. About 500 Elks and guests attended. SCHOOL PLAY IN VALLEY MOVIES Recognizing the educational value of "A Mid-Summer Night's Dream," which is to be given Friday afternoon at the Page, the Drama league has persuaded Mr. Allen to include it in the series of moving pictures that are shown at the fair in San Francisco. The Roosevelt school entertainment is introduced by English folk games, and followed by a sixth grade play, "A Mid-Summer Night's Dream." The English May Day idea has been carried throughout the entire program that is to be given Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Page theater. Only when it is remembered that there are but 123 pupils enrolled in this school, and that every pupil is taking an active part, can the efficient work of each teacher be fully appreciated. "Public entertainments are generally given by the talented few, chosen and drilled for the occasion. Regardless of the talent, this program represents the everyday classroom work of each child." COMMUNITY DAY TO BE AN 'EVENT' Medford merchants are planning on making Community Day, next Saturday, the biggest get-together event in the history of the valley. It is planned to foster a closed band of unity between the various sections of the county, and to this end entertainment is being elaborately arranged for all-comers. There will be free movies and free dinner, with plenty of band music. The size of the family does not matter — all will be given tickets upon application to any merchant in the city. The weather promises to be bright and clear for the day, which ensures a large crowd.
