Gibson turns in 731 series in state bowling Holly Gibson wielded a hot hand at the Oregon State Junior Young American Bowling Alliance Tournament in Klamath Falls last weekend. Gibson, a sophomore at Crater High School, rolled a 731 series in singles competition to move into first place in Division I. She then spun a 705 series in doubles play. Her partner, Brittany Agee of Roseburg, had a 639 series and the twosome took over first place in Division I doubles. Gibson entered the tournament with a 182 average, but all six of her games in the singles and doubles events exceeded 200. Her high game was a 266. In the team event, Gibson registered a 592 series. Gibson has also moved into first place in the all-events category. The state tournament began in March and concludes on April 15. Youth 3-on-3 basketball tourney set for Phoenix The Phoenix Spring Fling, an indoor 3-on-3 basketball tournament for grades 5-8, will be held Sunday, April 29, at Phoenix High School. The entry fee for teams of three or four players is $36. Teams are guaranteed three games. Boys and girls teams may compete together in one open division for each grade. Players also can compete for trophies in free-throw and 3-point contests. Entry deadline is April 20, but brackets are limited to the first eight teams to register in each grade. Benston bowls 299 game in Lava scratch league Steve Benston rolled a 299 game Thursday in the Brunswick Scratch Classic League at Lava lanes. Benston also had games of 245 and 207 for a 751 series. He carries a 213 average. YMCA registering for Pee Wee basketball The Rogue Valley Family YMCA in Medford is accepting registrations for its Spring Pee Wee Basketball League. First and second grade boys and girls practice for 30 minutes prior to playing games on Saturdays. The league begins on April 21. Cost is $13 for YMCA members and $26 for non-members. YMCA to conduct track and field clinic The YMCA is holding a track and field clinic, featuring North Medford coach Mark Hodges, on Saturday at Bowerman Field. The event begins at 10 a.m. and is aimed for third-through-sixth-grade boys and girls. Participants will receive instruction while trying different events. A six-week track program follows.
