LOCAL ROUNDUP Mustangs fend off Corvallis in 14-13 nail-biter MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 23, 2016 @ 2:00 am Posted Jun. 23, 2016 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> The Medford Mustangs made things interesting Wednesday night but found a way to fend off the Corvallis Marketmen for a 14-13 victory in nonleague American Legion AAA play at Harry & David Field. Medford (9-7) built a 12-5 lead through five innings but needed a strikeout by relief pitcher Josh Berman with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to stave off a comeback bid by Corvallis (8-4). “We made some really good adjustments at the plate and were able to put the ball in play hard on the ground a lot better than we were doing all last week so that was good,” said Mustangs manager Nate Mayben. “But we just didn’t seem to be real inspired defensively (with five errors). It seems like we were flat-footed a lot. We were lucky to walk away with that one with our hitting.” The Mustangs had a big night at the plate, belting out 16 hits to keep the Marketmen at bay. Berman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Greyson Wolff 2-for-2 with one run and three RBIs, Aaron Hutchinson 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Tate Cowden 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI and Cole Carder 2-for-6 with two runs and one RBI. For Corvallis, Zack Zalesky was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, James Anderson 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Blaise Sims 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Great West League PORTLAND 13, MEDFORD 1: At Portland, Medford managed its lone run in the fourth inning with two of its six hits against Portland in Game 2 of a three-game road series. The Rogues (9-5) finally got on the scoreboard when Jared Denning walked and moved to second on a single by Cam Russ. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice by David Bellamy and, after a walk by Braden Stutzman to load the bases, Ian Nowak supplied an RBI single. Carson Breshears was 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs and Zander Clarke 3-for-5 with one run and three RBIs for the Pickles (5-9).
