Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 11, 2004 Klamath again uses late score to top NV KLAMATH FALLS — For the second straight year, Klamath Union came up with a last-second touchdown to defeat North Valley. Daniel Bennett’s 3-yard touchdown run with nine seconds remaining lifted the Pelicans to a 13-7 nonconference victory over the visiting Knights at Modoc Field Friday. Last season, Klamath Union rallied for a 14-12 win. North Valley had tied the score at 7-all with 1:32 left on Anthony Spain’s 17-yard touchdown reception from Josh Makepeace and Jesse Reinhart’s point-after kick. A key play was Bennett’s 46-yard pass completion to Mark Brooks that took the ball to the North Valley five. Two plays later, Bennett went right up the middle on a quarterback sneak for the score. "It was a real heartbreaker," North Valley coach Todd Willaman said. "It was just like last year, but they scored with three seconds left last time." The Knights amassed 343 yards in offense to 186 for the Pelicans. North Valley picked up 14 first downs to five for KU. "We haven’t had that many yards in a long time," said Willaman. "We went double tight end and pounded the ball. It worked so we stayed with it." Klamath Union (2-0) capitalized on a fumble recovery for its first touchdown early in the second quarter. It took the Pels two plays to cover 54 yards for the score. A 53-yard pass play from Bennett to Alex Foster set up Jon Saxton’s 1-yard TD run. North Valley (0-1) tied the game with 1:32 to go on a methodical 55-yard, 10-play drive that consumed 6:28. Makepeace found Spain on a 27-yard pass prior to the TD catch by the senior receiver. Greg Richardson rushed for 126 of North Valley’s 216 yards. Tim Stickler added 65 yards on 15 carries. Makepeace was 10 of 18 passing for 127 yards and no interceptions. The Pels were limited to 37 yards on the ground. "Our defense played great, but we had a few breakdowns, and that’s all it takes," said Willaman. "Our linebackers and D-line played real tough. They were knocking people around."
