The Black Tornado only got one hit in a 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Irish, then lost 3-2 in extra innings to the Vancouver (Wash.) Crushers. North combined for five errors that helped contribute to the defeats. The double loss puts the Black Tornado (15-6) in a single-elimination situation for the rest of the tournament. In its opener, North Medford scored two runs in the top of the first on Rachelle Willden’s two run single but were blanked the rest of the way. Advertisement The Black Tornado fell behind 2-0 after two innings to Vancouver. North didn’t score until the seventh when it bunched together four hits to tie the game 2-all. Singles by Willden, Denay Martin, Jonni Byrne and Bethany Stousland accounted for the two runs. COLLEGE EXPOSURE JULY 4TH TOURNAMENT — At Portland, the Southern Oregon Sting won its first two games of pool play in the 32-team 18-under fastpitch event at Delta Park. The Sting, made up of players from numerous schools in Southern Oregon, blanked the Rebels of Kelso, Wash., 3-0, and defeated the Oregon Panthers of Salem, 8-1. In the opener, pitcher Laura Jones allowed one hit and struck out eight in six innings. The Sting (13-6) scored all three runs in the fourth inning on Jenni Bittle’s two-run single and an RBI single by Shannon Richardson. Bittle surrendered five hits and struck out four in going the distance in the second game. CLASS B STATE TOURNAMENT — At Newberg, the North Medford Black Tornado 12-under fastpitch team opened the 30-team double-elimination tournament with two victories. North Medford defeated the Sunset Spirit, 9-1, then blanked the Sherwood Fireballs, 8-0. Taylor Schmidt pitched both games, striking out 15 and allowing four hits in a total of 11 innings. Baseball MOUNT HOOD CARDINALS 1, S.O. RIVERDOGS 0 — At Portland, former Ashland High and Medford Mustang pitcher Mike Allen tossed a two-hit shutout in the 12-team Rose City Tournament at Walker Stadium. Allen, now pitching for Mount Hood Community College, struck out six and walked none. The Cardinals scored the only run of the game in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Brad Quick and Derek Englelke. Pitcher Mike McInerney (1-2) struck out eight and didn’t issue a walk for Southern Oregon. The RiverDogs’ hits came on a two-out single in the fifth by Jeremy Frantz and Dan Bruce’s pinch-hit single in the sixth. Mt. Hood Cardinals...............001 000 0 — 1 8 4 S.O. PEPSI FOURTH OF JULY TOURNAMENT — At Boise, Idaho, the Eagle Point Eagles (15-6) split a pair of games during the opening day of the 12-team affair. Eagle Point defeated the Eagle Vipers of Meridian, Idaho, 8-5, then dropped a 7-3 decision to the Boise Senators. In the first game, Eagle Point’s Derek Grieve, Kyle Snyder and Shasta Bateman each collected two hits and Nick Staller tossed a complete game. The Eagles had 12 hits and 10 walks, but stranded 14 runners on base. CENTRAL POINT COMETS 3-2, SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 1-9 — At Central Point, Central Point’s Jeff Weiss stymied South Medford in the American Legion A opener and Marcus James returned the favor against the Comets in the nightcap. Weiss scattered four hits and struck out three in the opening-game win against the Colts, who used two first-inning errors to tally its lone run. In Game 2, James struck out six and allowed only two hits in the complete-game victory. Central Point defeated Medford Federal Red 12-11 in a game that was completed Friday after being suspended because of darkness on Thursday. Mathew Cooper hit a triple and three-run double to boost Central Point over Brookings-Harbor, 9-7. Robbie Grabowski had two doubles and Chase Mackey pitched five innings with six strikeouts. In other games, Medford Nationals defeated Medford Federal Black, 23-4, and Medford Federal Red topped Illinois Valley, 23-7.
