The big movies opening at theaters this week are “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the final movie (this one rated PG-13) of the J.R.R. Tolkien series directed by Peter Jackson; “Annie,” a PG retelling of the classic film; and “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” a PG sequel in this franchise. 2. Christmas is almost here, and this weekend is perfect for a holiday movie marathon. Stay in and watch some of your favorites, be they “Elf,” “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “A Christmas Story,” “It’s A Wonderful Life” or others. 3. It’s also the perfect weekend to see a holiday concert. Community groups, orchestras and the like should be in full swing this weekend, so check the paper for listings. 4. It’s still not too late to go shopping. Last-minute deals abound, so check the paper for ads. And make sure you don’t forget the stocking present! 5. This past week kicked off the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count, which runs until Jan. 5, so there’s still plenty of time to participate. The annual event lets anyone get involved in tracking birds across the Americas. For more information, go to http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count .
