PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL South Medford splits SWC doubleheader Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 9, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 9, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News South Medford freshman Brandon Letendre shut out Willamette, 4-0, in the opener of a Southwest Conference baseball doubleheader Friday at Harry & David Field. But Wolverines pitcher Josh Glover limited South to one hit in the nightcap and the visitors came away with a 4-1 win to earn the split. In Game 1, Letendre (4-2) allowed six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. "He was able to locate his pitches and kept the ball down," said South Medford coach Ray Smith. "He had to pitch his way out of a couple of tough spots." The Panthers (8-15, 7-11 SWC) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when back-to-back, two-out doubles by Hunter Bradford and Jack Thompson gave South a 1-0 lead. The following inning South added two more runs on a Alex Bylund's two-run double. Matt DeVries had two hits and scored a run for South. Glover was the story for Willamette (5-18, 2-17) in the second game. The Panthers run was unearned against the junior lefty, who struck out five and walked five. Tyler Frost's one-out single in the seventh accounted for South's only hit. MARIST 14-5, CRATER 11-11: At Eugene, Neil Bastendorff and Cavin Gillispie paced a Crater attack that collected 26 hits in the doubleheader but managed only a MWL split. Bastendorff had six hits and two RBIs and Gillispie added four hits and three RBIs on the day. In Game 1, the Comets (9-14, 9-6 MWL) rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the score with five runs in the fifth inning, but Marist (11-10, 9-6) answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 12-6 lead. Caine Smith's two-run single and an RBI hit by Bastendorff highlighted the Comets' five-run fifth. Avery Martin paced the Comets in the opener with four hits, two runs and two RBIs and Bastendorff had four hits and one RBI. The Comets rapped five doubles in Game 2 and pitcher Brady Roland (2-4) went the distance. Dylan Pearce, Bastendorff, Gillispie and Gunnar Asher also had two hits for Crater. NORTH EUGENE 8-8, ASHLAND 0-3: At Eugene, Josh Spaht pitched a five-hitter and went 2-for-4 with a double to lead North Eugene to the opening victory. In the second game, Tommy Ashlstrom tossed a three-hitter and struck out eight and also went 3-for-4 with a double for North Eugene (17-5, 12-3 MWL). For Ashland (13-11, 8-10), Jerry Carroll hit a solo home run in the second game. Softball CRATER 10-6, SPRINGFIELD 1-5: At Central Point, Olivia Ryerson and Tristin Fisher each had three hits to spark Crater in the opener, then the Comets rallied from a three-run deficit in the night to complete the sweep. Ryerson had two RBIs and scored twice while Fisher had two runs and one RBI to back up Brittney Hassel's (7-9) five-hitter. In Game 2, Brianna Sheppard collected two hits and one RBI and Sydney Beck and Abby Pearce added one hit and scored two runs each for Crater (9-14, 8-8). ASHLAND 3-13, NORTH EUGENE 2-3: At Ashland, Grace Lenthe’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning run for Ashland in Game 1, and the Grizzlies needed only five innings in Game 2 for the MWL sweep. Lenthe’s bases-loaded hit up the middle with nobody out scored Teresa Lehman and Hannah Teixiera. Lenthe, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in the second game, had three hits and three RBIs in the opener. ROGUE RIVER 20-10, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0-0: Rogue River's Alyssa Sands tossed a shutout in each end of the SCL doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Park. In the five-inning opener, the Chieftains capitalized on 14 walks and six hit batters. Sands allowed just two hits and provided a double, two RBIs and scored twice. In Game 2, Laura Potter had two doubles, a triple and two RBIs to spark Rogue River's 16-hit attack. The Chieftains also received three hits and two RBIs from Sarah Smith, while Sands, Kobie Gibson, Marina Hall, Kortney Hardy and Heather Myer added two hits apiece.
