Grants Pass, Ashland to meet in playoff Grants Pass received production from some unexpected sources against North Medford in a crucial Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball game Tuesday. Sophomores Shanna Claflin and Erin Glovinsky provided the surprise boost for Grants Pass as the Cavers defeated the Black Tornado 43-27 in a must-win situation. The Grants Pass victory coupled with Ashland's 58-42 loss to Roseburg moves the Cavers into a SOC fourth-place tie with the Grizzlies at 7-7. Grants Pass will host a SOC playoff game 7 p.m. Thursday against the Grizzlies, with a Class 4A state playoff berth at stake. The teams split a pair of regular-season league contests. North Medford completed the season with a disappointing 2-12 conference record and 5-18 overall. Grants Pass scored 77 points and senior post Megan Moon tallied 32 in an earlier season victory over North Medford. Moon was held to 11 this time around and the Cavers scored 34 fewer points. But Claflin, who wasn't even on the varsity at the beginning of the season, and Glovinsky combined for 17 points and 17 rebounds to make a huge difference. Another sophomore, Kelly Briggs, contributed four points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. "Our sophomores have really stepped up their game," Grants Pass coach Ken Lathen said. "That gave us so much balance." North Medford suffered through a frustrating shooting night (11-40). "We had plenty of opportunities," said North Medford coach JT Thomas. "They were the type of shots we wanted in the paint. They just weren't falling for us tonight." Junior post Kerstin Mellbye and freshman point guard Kailey Bostwick had strong performances for the Black Tornado. Mellbye scored a team-high eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Bostwick scored six points, on 2-of-4 shooting from 3-point range, dished out four assists and came away with three steals. "Kirstin has become a recognizable threat in the post," said Thomas. "In the last five games she's getting shots, getting assists and playing good defense." JV result - North Medford won. ROSEBURG 58, ASHLAND 42 - At Roseburg, Roseburg wrapped up a 12-2 SOC campaign with a fine defensive effort against Ashland. As the SOC's second seed, the Indians (16-5 overall) play host to a Class 4A state-playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. A victory then would propel Roseburg into the state tournament at the Chiles Center in Portland. Tuesday night, the Indians were topped by senior wing Lindsey Heard's 18 points and six rebounds. Sophomore point guard Katie Stephens drilled four of Roseburg's nine 3-pointers for 12 points. The Grizzlies (11-13, 7-7 SOC) could have clinched the conference's fourth and final postseason berth with a victory, but now they have to settle for a tiebreaking game Thursday at 7 p.m. at Grants Pass. Junior post Marla Morin scored 14 points to pace Ashland, which trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half after trailing by just six at the break. JV result - Roseburg won. KLAMATH UNION 48, EAGLE POINT 42 - At Klamath Falls, Eagle Point received good production from posts Alisa Lee and Ashley Curtis, who combined for 27 points and 20 rebounds. Klamath Union, which lost all its first-round conference games, came back to tie Eagle Point and North Medford for sixth in the SOC at 2-12. Senior Megan Leppert paced Klamath Union with 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Brandy Bocchi and Beth Fagan came through with nine points each for the Pels. Eagle Point (5-18, 2-14) trailed 11-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles worked back to take a one-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but tired down the stretch.
