South runs away from Ashland ASHLAND � South Medford got off to another blazing start then finished off Ashland with a fourth-quarter run as the Panthers rolled to a 76-68 Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball victory. Junior center Eric Fiegi scored nine points in the first quarter as the Panthers jumped in front 20-3 en route to a 22-7 lead after eight minutes. Fiegi went on to score 24 points, grab nine rebounds and block six shots, while Ryan Heil matched Fiegi�s 24 points as the third-place Panthers improved to 10-3 in the SOC and 18-5 overall. "We got off to a good start, but I�m not real certain why we can�t sustain it," South Medford coach Dennis Murphy said. "At times we let them get right back into it." South led 36-25 at the half and by 10 going into the fourth quarter before John McKay ignited a burst that extended the Panthers lead to 18 points with a series of steals. Ashland (5-17, 0-13 SOC) was paced by Lance Streng�s 18 points. The Grizzlies also collared 15 offensive rebounds. Fifth-ranked Grants Pass (21-2, 11-2 SOC), which was led by Ian Elseth�s 20 points, raced to a 16-4 first-quarter lead and finished off the Comets with a 23-point third period. Tyler York and Andy Dobner scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the winners, who also got eight each from Craig Berg and Brant Minor. ROSEBURG 93, KLAMATH UNION 56 � At Roseburg, junior center Joe Newton made all 11 field goal attempts in registering a game-high 26 points to go with 11 rebounds as seventh-ranked Roseburg (18-4, 12-1 SOC) retained its one-game first place lead in the SOC. Roseburg used a dominating 43-15 edge on the boards and shot 70 percent from the field (34-48) to control the contest. The Indians left little to chance after jumping out to a 23-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
